In my previous job, I had a pool of vehicles at my disposal. I had a set 726km route I drove with 3 of my family members (99.5% highway) in many different vehicles, so I can now give you not only my Magna's outcome, but compare it (apples for apples) with other vehicles..
Same passengers, same route, different vehicles.
2013 VW Amarok (auto 2.0L bi-turbo diesel, 13,000km on the clock) = 9.2L/100km
2012 VW Passat (auto 2.0 L turbo diesel, 22,000km on the clock) = 6.4L/100km
2012 Toyota Kluger KXS (auto 3.5L v6 VVT Petrol, 19,000km on the clock) = 9.4L/100km
2011 Toyota Rav 4 CV (auto 2.4L 4cyl VVT Petrol 31,000km on the clock) = 8.8L/100km
To my continuing astonishment, my 2001 TJ Magna auto (HUGE $3,000 investment!!) with a 3.5L V6, 163,000km on the clock, returned an amazing 8.1L/100km....running BP 95 octane...when I had finished the 726km, it still said it had 1/8 of a tank left !!!
Car is completely mechanically unmodified, however I have recently cleaned MAF sensor, installed new front bank spark plugs, cleaned throttle body, had it serviced (including gearbox flush) and gave it 2 tanks of injector cleaner (1 bottle per tank to be sure!)
I am absolutely amazed, astounded and in awe of this machine given its age the (not so modern) level of sophistication by todays standards, and its purchase price...An amazing vehicle !
